At first glance, the 14-year-old girl in the picture above seems to be fine. In 2007, Rebecca was still in high school. Her disorder is not apparent in this image, but it wouldn't be long before the first signs started showing. People suffering from trichotillomania have a constant urge to pull out their hair.

She wanted to raise awareness of her disorder in general and photographed herself daily for more than six years. The last picture is really emotional.

This silly picture is the first of many that Rebecca took over the next six years. The video on the last page will clearly show how the girl changed over the years and how she struggled with her disorder. The following pages feature a selection of several photos that Rebecca has published. It is sad to see her suffering so much when she should be in the prime of her life.

These photos were picked from one of her videos at random and clearly show that living with trichotillomania is not fun. And that is exactly the message the teenager wanted to communicate to the outside world. But you can definitely look forward to the end of the list because Rebecca has now developed into a completely different person!

On her fifteenth birthday, Rebecca still looked like any other teenager. For the photo, she is holding up a birthday sign. She also painted her cheeks and put on a blue hat. Here, it is not clear that she has already starting ripping out her hair ...

In order to not be so tempted to constantly pull her hair, Rebecca decided to go for a cut. So, she picked up a pair of scissors and cut off her long curly hair. The result was a short hairstyle.

Despite the disorder, Rebecca clearly still was trying to have fun with her hair. Above, you can see that she painted her face orange and dyed her hair green.

In this picture, her short hair is a bit tousled and still slightly damp from a shower. Here, she has made sure that her hair is hiding the bald patches on her head ...

Rebecca tried various fun things to hide her hair. She was ashamed of her condition, which made her head look increasingly bald. That's why, in this picture, she is wearing an old-fashioned wig. Along with her clothes and the matching old-fashioned glasses, she gives the impression of being from the '60s!

With her bright pink knitted hat on her head, Rebecca looks like any other girl in her age. The next picture looks a bit different, however. There, you will see a sick Rebecca at her lowest point, being almost completely bald. You can only see fuzzy bits of hair on her head, and the rest has been removed without exception ...

Rebecca does not look so happy anymore. Where did the fun and cheerful girl go whom we saw in the pictures before? Rebecca, at 16 years old, was in bad shape. She had no hair on her head, looked pale, and had an irregular complexion. The dark circles under her eyes express how much her condition makes her suffer.

This picture is similar to the previous one. Here, however, Rebecca is wearing something over her head, a soft hood. Because she no longer had thick hair on her head, she always felt a bit cold.

Our brave heroine did not just take a picture of herself this time. Her support and comfort in times of need had always been her cat. Therefore, the little cutie deserved to be photographed with her. In times of depression, Rebecca's cat was always there for her ...

A few months later, Rebecca's hair started to grow back. The only question was, How long it would stay?Once it was long enough, the temptation to tear out all the hair again would be great. Nevertheless, one can certainly agree that she looks much better in this photo than in previous ones, even though she is still asking for help ...

Rebecca seems entirely different here! The long black wig gives her face a different look, one that resembles the "old" Rebecca again: a bright young girl full of life.

Rebecca's front hair is a bit longer here. In the middle of her head, however, she had started pulling hair again. To cover up the bald patch, she used a green scarf.

In honor of her "best friend," her cat, Rebecca made herself look cat-like. The special thing about this photo is that the girl painted whiskers onto her cheeks, despite the fact that she hates hair and prefers to pull out every single one.

Rebecca is part of the estimated 2% of the population suffering from trichotillomania. Therefore, it is good that she wants to draw attention to this unpleasant illness with her videos. She also expresses herself completely, as you can see in this photo. Her expression and the message on her forehead indicate that she feels hurt and broken.

You may not have noticed it right away, but Rebecca is wearing one of her many wigs here and put the hair in curlers. "Hiding my problem is a lot of work, whether it's rubber bands, needles, hair bands, or clips — I often get everything out of the closet to look as decent as I can," the teenager said.

In this photo, Rebecca has put a white layer of paint onto her face and combined that with her white pajama coat. That's why she looks a bit like a clown here. This day was one of her better moments, when she did not feel depressed.

Things can change easily, however. In the previous picture, Rebecca looked happy. But in this snapshot, it is the other way around. Now the young lady has tears in her eyes and her glasses are askew. On such days, Rebecca would even make suicide attempts ...

But every day is a new day and Rebecca kept moving forward in life. Since she has very few hairs, she wore one of her many wigs to take this picture. This time, it is a cute hairstyle with two pigtails. With the make-up, she almost resembles Heidi. What a difference a few months can make!

Slowly, things are getting better. Rebecca has been taking photos of herself for over six years now. This picture is the first one in which we do not see her alone (or with her cat). She finally wanted to show herself in the company of other people. Her bald spots are now in the past, and she seems to be in better control of her illness.

Rebecca said, "For a long time I did not know how and if I should continue my life; everything felt so hopeless to me and I thought it would be better to just give up. I was tired of constantly fighting my trichotillomania, I did not want any bald spots on my head any longer and I did not want to hide from others!"

By the time she reached her 21st birthday, she had made more than 2,000 photos: one picture a day.

Anyone who watches her slideshow video can get a thorough idea of the disease that Rebecca had finally overcome. Now that she was 21 years old and had a good grip on her trichotillomania, it was time for her to put an end to the impressive photo series.

It's an emotional story with a nice ending. When we looked at the last photo, it was difficult for us to hold back tears. Rebecca Jane Brown is a strong person whom we have great respect for.

VIDEO

Rebecca said something else about her story:

"Hiding my bald spots meant a big crack in my self-esteem, which was the worst part of ripping my hair out, doing it even though I did not want that at all, and after that, I was always so mad at myself. Why could I not just stop it, why did I always have to keep going?"

Be sure to check out the video below. (On her YouTube channel, Rebecca has many more nice videos as well!)
