It is quite a funny fact that most of the people are seen driving on the parkways and parking their cars on the driveways. But why does this happen, did anybody give a thought to it?
It gets only noticed by the people when a person like a comedian or an authority points it out. Check out the valid explanations about this particular question in the following article.
How does the word park evolve?
Just before the automobiles came into existence, the word parking referred to as the act of planting trees while the term parking place was generally taken as the place designated to various flora and fauna. This is why the word ‘park’ is still referred to as an ample space designated to be filled with greenery and sometimes wildlife.
The word park was first started being associated with stationary vehicles from the early 20th century, because of the increasing popularity of the automobiles. Before the adoption of parkways for parking the cars, it was used to store the carriages and the horses. Soon after the masses of people started to adopt cars over transports, these parkways were then used for parking the vehicles instead of the horse carriages.
This is how the term “parking place” came into being.
The initial idea about forming the parkways was to provide a scenic and easy way for the people to commute from one place to another. Later after parking places came into being, these places were reconstructed according to its primary purpose, i.e., to be used for parking automobiles or for traveling fast than the scenery. This context clears the fact that people drive and not just park on the parkways.
Why do we park on the driveways?
Driveways are the single carriageways for the motor vehicle to drive, which are mostly in front of the house, garage, or buildings. This definition is more or less the same ever since this word came into being, which is almost a century and a half. The first-ever known instance of the use of this word was in the 1870s, but what has changed is mostly the size of the driveways.
In the 19th century, the word driveway as used in the context of the path leading to someone’s home, which is much longer than today’s time. Also, some people had small driveways in their homes for the idea of using it to store the car. However, driveways were just used to walk, ride the horse, and carriage up to your home.
All the above data of the facts has made it quite clear why we usually park our vehicles in the driveways without even giving a second thought to it.
