When was the last time you updated your bucket list? The Taj Mahal? Patagonia? Everest? What sits on top? Surely visiting Iceland to witness the Northern Lights is pretty high up on the list. If it isn’t on your list spend about two minutes on google and it soon will be. The splendor in the night sky is literally unparalleled in the whole world and is a must-see for any admirer of nature or beauty.
Iceland is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights due to its geographical position, high up in the Northern Hemisphere and due to its low levels of light pollution thanks to the small population. These factors make Iceland the ideal getaway. Not only that but the people and nature of Iceland are incredible as well.
If you do choose to visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights, you want to do it the right way. You don’t want to be peaking out of the side of your car to try and get a glimpse while buildings in the distance ruin your view.
You want to choose the perfect location and the perfect accommodation. Well, look no further. The people of Iceland are well aware of the unique beauty they have and have started to build small igloos with glass ceilings. This enables couples (max per igloo is 2 people) to sleep under the aurora borealis while looking out on a fjord and surrounded by the Lyngen Alps. If there is a better place to look at one of the world’s greatest sights we don’t know it. If you are a larger group or family there are some more spacious huts that can be used. However, we think this is such an amazing and beautiful experience it should be saved for a romantic getaway.
The price of this accommodation is steep, however. A night in one of these igloos will set you back KR3,850.00 or approximately $US550. That price is per igloo per night, not per person per night, so it is not so bad. To make matters a little more tricky they are booked out for the next few months so you must book well in advance.
While Iceland is known for being expensive itself and a little difficult to get to, it is definitely worth the effort for this memory that will stay with you and your loved ones for a lifetime.
